No.7 seed Rublev, who hwasn't allowed to compete at Wimbledon last year, has endeared himself to the crowd with some heroic shot-making. His diving winner to set up match point against Alexander Bublik was one of the most memorable highlights of the championship so far – possibly even the shot of the tournament.
He'd do well to get the crowd on his side for this clash against the defending champion. Djokovic's victory over world No.18 Hubert Hurkacz yesterday was, get this, his 43rd in a row on Centre Court, an astonishing run that stretches all the way back to 2014.
There's an equally mind-bending but slightly less uplifting stat about Rublev too. Despite long tipped for the top, the 25-year-old has never progressed beyond the quarter-finals stage of any grand slam. He's played seven previous quarter-finals and lost them all.
It's a barely comprehensible feat considering his near-continuous presence in the top 10 over the past few years. Until he gets over the block, he won't be viewed as a serious threat for major titles. Something that can't be said for Djokovic, whose masterful performances over the past week have once again made him the outright favorite for the Gentlemen's Singles Trophy.

After getting the better of Poland's Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round thanks to a four-set victory, current world number two and reigning Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic now faces Russia's Andrey Rublev at the quarter final stage.
The 25-year-old Moscow star has been in solid form all season, possessing a 35-13 win-loss record across 2023 on the ATP Tour, and will likely prove to be Djokovic's toughest test to date at this year's tournament.
After his latest win, Rublev moved to a career win rate of 73.1% on grass, which is the third-best record among the current ATP top 20, behind only Djokovic himself (86%) and world number one Carlos Alcaraz (84.6%).
As such, the decorated Serbian will have to be at his very best in this matchup to progress and continue his march towards a joint-record eighth Wimbledon title.
After dispatching 17th seed Hurkacz in four sets last time out, reigning tournament champion Djokovic will be full of confidence as he hunts down his third major title of the year. Rublev should be his toughest test to date though, the Russian star coming through a five-set epic against Alexander Bublik in the previous round to set up this heavyweight showdown.
Novak Djokovic emerged victorious against Hubert Hurkacz in his toughest 2023 Wimbledon match so far. The Serb, who was down in the two first tie-breaks managed to win the first two sets, and although the Pole won the third, Nole closed the match being the better player in the fourth and last one (7-6, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4).
Meanwhile, Rublev needed five hard-fought and intense sets to beat the in-form and explosive Alexander Bublik, who had defeated the Russian in the Halle final two weeks before.
Djokovic will need to be ready for a war of exchanges when he faces Rublev. The Russian is one of the best players from the baseline and he doesn’t make many unforced errors. However, grass isn’t his favorite surface and Djokovic looks in supreme shape and very confident in Wimbledon. We expect the Serb to get it done and keep progressing in London.
Novak Djokovic is back in action on Centre Court at Wimbledon today with a meeting against Andrey Rublev. Hubert Hurkacz pushed the Serbian and his record at Wimbledon all the way earlier this week but Djokovic managed to return after the curfew in order to make it into the final eight.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner has since hit out at the curfew in SW19 but will be confident of seeing this one done before the close of play. Rublev is something of a familiar foe having met four times before in their careers, with Djokovic boasting three wins to the Russian’s one thus far.
Still, Rublev almost denied the Serbian on home soil last year in dramatic fashion and does have fresher legs after Djokovic’s two-day battle. His forehand has been pointed out by Djokovic and it looks the most dangerous weapon.
