The best players in Major League Baseball will take the field in Seattle tonight for the 2023 All-Star Game. The American League has been on an All-Star roll of late and will look for its tenth consecutive victory over the National League in the Midsummer Classic. First pitch is scheduled for tonight at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) tonight on ESPN.
The All-Star game puts the best of the MLB’s American and National Leagues up against one another, an annual event that’s been on the program for 93 years. The American League is the reigning champ over the last nine years and leads the series 47-43-2.
Elected starters for the American League includes the Texas Rangers’ Jonah Heim and Marcus Semien and the Tampa Bay Rays’ Yandy Díaz. The National League elected starters will include the Atlanta Braves’ Sean Murphy and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts. The Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and the Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen are set as the starting pitchers.
The best and brightest stars that Major League Baseball has to offer will suit up for the 2023 MLB All-Star Game on July 11 from T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, home of the Mariners. This marks the third time Seattle has hosted the All-Star Game (1979 and 2001). The American League has won an impressive nine straight All-Star games and needs two more victories to tie the 11-game winning streak by the National League from 1972-1982.
Many fans will be tuning in to witness the greatness of Los Angeles Angels sensation Shohei Ohtani. Although he won’t be pitching in the Midsummer Classic, Ohtani is having an MVP season at the plate, batting .302 with home runs and 71 RBI. Other stars set to play in the All-Star Game include Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr., Los Angeles’s Mookie Betts, New York’s Gerrit Cole, San Diego’s Juan Soto, and more.
The American League owns a 47-43-2 record all-time over the National League in the Midsummer Classic, and will try to win its 10th straight game on Tuesday. Los Angeles Angels DH/pitcher Shohei Ohtani was the top vote getter for the AL and he will lead a star-studded roster including the likes of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Corey Seager, and Randy Arozarena, among others. Superstars Mike Trout and Aaron Judge were both voted on as starters, but will be unable to play due to injury.
The National League has only won three All-Star Games since 1997 and is seeking its first victory in this exhibition since 2012. Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. was the top vote getter for the NL and he will lead a roster that ranges from All-Star veterans like Nolan Arenado and Freddie Freeman to first-timers like Orlando Arcia and Corbin Carroll.

The New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole will start Tuesday night’s All-Star Game for the American League and Arizona’s Zac Gallen will open on the mound for the NL.
AL manager Dusty Baker of Houston and NL manager Rob Thomson of Philadelphia announced their starting lineups on Monday before the annual Home Run Derby.
Cole will start for the first time in his sixth All-Star nod. He is 9-2 with a 2.85 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 117 innings. The 32-year-old right-hander joins Lefty Gomez (five times), Red Ruffing (twice), Hank Borowy, Spud Chandler, Roger Clemens, Whitey Ford, Jimmy Key, Vic Raschi, Met Stottlemyre, Bob Turley and David Wells as Yankees All-Star starters.
Gallen, a 27-year-old right-hander, is 11-3 with a 3.04 ERA, tied for the major league lead in wins. The first-time All-Star has 125 strikeouts in 118 1/3 innings and becomes the third Diamondbacks pitcher to start an All-Star Game after Randy Johnson in 2000 and ‘01 and Curt Schilling in 2002.
Gallen said he learned of the starting assignment last Wednesday and had been telling “white lies” since then, including to his family.
The Yankees and Diamondbacks have All-Star starting pitchers for the time since Clemens and Johnson in the 2001 game at Seattle.
Baker said Sunday that Cole wouldn’t pitch in the All-Star Game because he would be going on two days’ rest after throwing 103 pitches in a 9-2 win over the Chicago Cubs in New York on Saturday.
Baker’s AL batting order has Texas second baseman Marcus Semien leading off, followed by Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, Tampa Bay left fielder Randy Arozarena, Texas shortstop Corey Seager, Rays first baseman Yandy Díaz, Rangers right fielder Adolis García, Baltimore center fielder Austin Hays, Texas third baseman Josh Jung and Rangers catcher Jonah Heim.
Atlanta right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. leads off for the NL, followed by Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, Dodgers center fielder Mookie Betts, Dodgers designated hitter J.D.
