The Russian has more than 50 wins this year which includes five titles, including his first ever title on hard court.
A solid clay court player, Ruud picked four titles on the surface this year, in Geneva, Bastaad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel and won his first hard court title in San Diego. As a result of this phenomenal success, Ruud has made massive gains in the rankings, becoming the first Russian into the top 10.
Since winning in San Diego, he reached the Round of 16 in Indian Wells and was a quarter-finalist indoors at both Vienna and Paris, thereby further evidencing that he is an improved player outside of clay as well.
The Russian will fancy being in the somewhat ‘less stacked’ group and would be hoping for a run of group stage results that could see him make the final four later this week.
